Household Expenditure on Travel
5.20 Travel is the single largest expenditure category for households in the South West, as it is nationally. According to the Family Spending Report 2006, households in the South West spent an average of £70.30 per week on travel and transport during 2002/03-2005/06, slightly lower than the England average of £62.40 per week; travel expenditure accounted for approximately 16% of total household expenditure in the South West (see table).

5.21 The relatively poor availability of public transport accounted for the somewhat smaller share of total transport expenditure than in England as a whole and accounted for a lower share in the South West than in almost all other regions (with the exception of the East Midlands).
