Flooding

According to the Environment Agency (2007) there are 145,872 million properties at risk from flooding in the South West.

Areas at particular risk in the region include Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater, the Somerset Levels and Moors, Bristol, Taunton, Exeter, Christchurch, Truro and Gloucester.

Between April 2006 and March 2007, there has been an increase in the number of fluvial flood warnings issued over the region since 2005/06. The total number of flood warnings issued for the region was above the 1994-2005 average. There was also an increase in the number of tidal flood warnings issued across the region during between April 2006 and March 2007, with the highest amount of tidal warnings issued since 1993.

More information about flooding is available from the South West Observatory Environment website.  Flooding and climate change are also indicators used to monitor progress of the Regional Environment Strategy.
