Introduction
10.1 This chapter aims to give an insight into the nature of society in the South West region, and to identify some of the issues and challenges it faces in the twenty-first century. Measurements in this area are far from simple. The way in which individuals experience the world is unique to each. How each individual develops, and their engagement with society, is shaped by a myriad of social, cultural and environmental factors.
10.2 However, there are some reliable indicators that can give an insight into the ‘social shape’ of a region, such as incomes, the extent of reliance on state benefits, what people spend their money on, and how many have access to services. More broadly, it is also possible to assess the extent to which people support each other in a variety of formal and informal situations, as well as the degree to which they participate in and are connected to their local community.
