11.18 Between 1998 and 2005 the number of cultural sector businesses increased by 3%, employment increased by 14% and turnover increased by 29%, (ONS 2006). A large proportion of the increased turnover may simply be the result of inflation. By contrast, for the same period in England, the number of cultural businesses increased slightly by 0.4%, employment increased by 24% and turnover increased by 49%. The growth and decline rates for business count, employment and turnover for each of the seven cultural domains are shown below.
