Students in Higher Education
4.39 Information available from the annual HEFCE publication, Regional Profiles, shows that the South West has one of the smallest student populations in England. Only the East of England and the North East have smaller ones. Student numbers from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show, in 2005/06, the South West had nearly 156,000 higher education (HE) students in the region’s 13 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). This is a 2.9% growth in student numbers on 2004/05.
4.40 The University of Bristol, the University of the West of England, and the University of Plymouth are the regions largest institutions, accounting for over 50% of the HE student population.
