4.56 Employer-led workforce development programmes are important contributors to the overall skills levels. Whether the training is job-related or part of a broader personal and professional development programme, its contribution is significant.
4.57 Participation by adults in learning and training has always been high in the South West. Data for 2005 shows that 75.8% of the region’s working age population had participated in learning (either taught or non-taught) at some point in the last three years. This is the second highest rate of participation of the English regions and marginally above the national average of 71.2%.
4.58 Participation rates vary across the region with the highest rates in Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bournemouth, and the lowest rates, below the regional average, in Dorset, Somerset and Bristol.
