On 8th September 2010, the South West Observatory hosted a technical workshop on 'Understanding Local Population Projections'. The purpose of this event was to get together people interested in/working on this topic, to provide an overview of nationally and locally available projections; to compare methodologies used in the South West for calculating local projections; and to look at some of the policy implications on this topic going forward.

Keith Woodhead (former SW Councils) opened the day with an guide to the nationally available population projections and their various merits, before introducing the reasons and benefits for projecting at a local level.
Gloucestershire's presentation covered detail on their methodology for projecting at a local level.  Gloucestershire are unique in calculating their own locally-derived population estimates, which they use as the base for deriving their projections.
Wiltshire were due to present at this event, but unfortunately had to pull out due to sickness. Jayne Dale kindly offerred to step in and present on the local population projections calculated between Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole. This presentation focused more on the process of working in partnership, rather than the technical detail of the derived projections.
Prior to the afternoon's discussion session, Keith's second presentation was the last of the day. Keith focused on some of the policy considerations for projecting at a local level, including the importance of using the most appropriate method for the geographical scale of the projections being calculated.
