Local Economic Assessments (LEAs)

Add to favourites
Local Economic Assessments provide Local Authorities with an opportunity to better understand their area in order to better target resources and better plan for the future. The South West Observatory works alongside all Local Authorities in the South West to help coordinate and support their evidence needs to do this.

Further to the change of government in May 2010, guidance in relation to LEAs was removed. Local Authorities are now free to determine how they take forward their own LEAs however the government has suggested they play a 'crucial role' in underpinning the work of local enterprise partnerships.

This section provides useful information about assessments (completed and pending) as well as data on common Core Indicators.

  • Developing a Consistent Approach to Economic Assessments Project Report (June 2011) [pdf / 136KB] This report aims to tell the story of the project, to summarise the achievements and to provide information on any 'lessons learnt' in order to help similar projects in the future. The two-year RIEP-funded project included the appointment of a full-time co-ordinator from July 2009 until end of June 2011. This report examines the key achievements of the project in the first and second year. Just before the second year of the project commenced there was a change in Government.
Common Core Indicators were agreed by local authority data practitioners in the South West to help with Local Economic Assessments. The idea was to agree the best source and use of indicators that would address the sorts of questions and themes Local Authorities might wish to cover within their LEA.  Local Authorities who wish to cover any of those themes within their LEA, could use the suggested data set and trend etc as suggested below to enable consistency and comparison with their neighbours.
