Key Offences
  • In 2010/11 South Gloucestershire had the 8th lowest overall crime rate of the 16 county and unitary authorities in the South West at 30.6 offences per 1,000 population.
  • The overall crime rate was lower than the average for both the South West (33.8) and England and Wales (41.3).
  • Overall crime in South Gloucestershire fell from a rate of 35.5 in 2009/10. This included decreases in the rates of all key offences shown in the graph.
  • In 2010/11 Avon & Somerset Police ranked lowest of all South West force areas for people having confidence in the police and local councils dealing with issues (52.6% strongly agree/tend to agree, England and Wales average was 52.7%).

IMD 2010
  • In the IMD 2010, only one of South Gloucestershire’s 162 Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) ranked among the most deprived 20% in England, part of Staple Hill ward.
  • Almost half (78) of South Gloucestershire’s LSOAs ranked in the least deprived 20% in England.  Of these, 52 rank in the least deprived 10%, with 4 of these among the least deprived 1% (2 in Bradley Stoke ward and 2 in Thornbury North).

  • In Q1 2010 the median house price in South Gloucestershire was £175,000, just under 4% below the South West median (£181,500) and the same as the England median (£175,000).
  • This was a 4% decrease on the previous quarter and a 10% decrease from Q1 of 2010.

  • Affordability ratios are calculated as house price divided by annual workplace-based earnings.
  • Using median house prices and earnings (2010 data) gives a median affordability ratio in South Gloucestershire of 6.9 (South West 7.9, England 7.0).
  • The lower quartile (LQ) ratio based on lower quartile house prices and earnings better reflects the first time buyers’ market.  The South Gloucestershire LQ ratio is 7.8 (South West 8.2, England 6.7).

Homelessness and Temporary Accommodation
  • In the financial year of 2010/11, South Gloucestershire accepted 173 households (1.6 per 1,000) as being homeless and in priority need (South West 1.5, England 2.0). South Gloucestershire had 82 households in temporary accommodation, 7 of which were in bed and breakfast accommodation.
  • In the same year in South Gloucestershire there were a total of 147 households where positive action was successful in preventing or relieving homelessness (1.4 per 1,000 households, South West 7.2, England 8.7).

Land Use
  • In 2007-10, 70% of new dwellings in South Gloucestershire were built on previously developed land.  This was higher than the South West average (66%), but below that of England (77%), an increase from 65% in 2003-06.
  • In 2007-10, the number of new dwellings built per hectare in South Gloucestershire was 46 (South West 38, England 43).

Environmental Designations
  • The Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) extends into the eastern part of the South Gloucestershire UA area.
  • South Gloucestershire includes several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), including The Severn Estuary, Bishop’s Hill Wood and St Catherine’s Valley.

Green Belt
  • The former Avon area includes 64,160 hectares of designated Green Belt land, just over 58% of the total Green Belt designated for the whole South West.
  • 23,230 hectares of this is within the South Gloucestershire area, the second largest amount of Green Belt among South West local authorities.

Road Casualties
  • In 2010, there were 301 road casualties per 100,000 people in South Gloucestershire, lower than the rate for the South West (310) and England (355).
  • 10.8% of these casualties resulted in death or serious injury, lower than the South West and England rates (both 11.5%).
