From November to March, the Observatory held free seminars to showcase recent research in the fields of health, skills, planning, biodiversity, the environment, culture and the economy. These seminars were designed to be informative and enjoyable for a non-specialist audience. The seminar presentations are available to download below.
South West Public Health Observatory
The SWPHO seminar "Reducing alcohol-related harm in the South West - a blueprint for joint action" was held on the 19/11/2007. The seminar presented the findings from a major report into alcohol misuse in the region, including analysis at sub-regional levels, looking at:
- levels of alcohol consumption;
- effects on health;
- relationship with health inequalities;
- effects on family and society;
- relationship with crime and disorder;
- prevention and treatment;
- monitoring progress.

Business & Economy Module
The Business & Economy Module seminar titled "Globalisation - Why it matters to South West England" was held on 06/02/2008. The seminar looked at how the South West debate has considered the region's appetite and readiness for global influences on our economy. The seminar also considered some scenarios of what we might face in the future and some conclusions as to what might help us if we want to be "in the game". Culture Module
The Culture Module seminar was held on the 11/02/2008 and was titled "An Introduction to 'People, Places and Spaces. A Cultural Infrastructure Development Strategy for the South West: Planning and Cultural Research".
