This report gives an overview of social statistics of the urban areas of the South West with a population
of 2,000 to 25,000. The work was originally undertaken on behalf of the Market and Coastal Towns
Association (MCTA) to assist in the allocation of resources.
- The report provides an overview of the main settlements of the South West at an 'intuitive' geography,
and so highlights issues that perhaps have previously not been apparent.
- Census based 'urban areas' have been chosen as they are the most consistent definition of
settlements, of all sizes, across the region. They do not necessarily reflect perceptions of town
boundaries on the ground.
- The report highlights the location of these urban areas, maps their overall Index of Multiple Deprivation
2004 scores, county by county and provides an overview of some of the key statistics available for
urban areas (See Appendix 3) taken form the results of the 2001 Census. It is aimed at members of the
Observatory, partners and interested organisations across the South West.
