Research

One of the primary functions of the Observatory is the dissemination of intelligence and research related to regional policy in the South West of England. The projects below have been produced principally by the Core Unit. For thematic projects please see the module web sites or search SouthWestID.

Current online resources

Travel to Work Patterns for South West Urban Areas. (5MB PDF file) - Paper produced by the Core Unit in January 2005, commissioned by the South West Regional Assembly to inform the Regional Spatial Strategy.

South West Rural Economy - Taking Stock (1MB PDF file) - Research paper produced by the Core Unit in January 2003.

Census 2001 - Useful links and analysis of the 2001 census

Travel to work analysis (final report coming soon) - using 2001 census data travel to work zones of influence around urban areas of the South West

Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2004 - The 2004 Indices of Multiple deprivation have been fully mapped for the region and main urban areas along with analysis by the Core Unit.

Common Research Agenda - A programme to map out common research areas across the region.

State of the South West - The major report published in July 2004 contains a comprehensive review of the region’s economic, social, environmental and cultural life.

SouthWestID - is an expanding on-line library of information about South West England. It has been set up by the South West Observatory to help promote the use of evidence in the region's policy making, and is also a resource for business, schools, students and the general public. It contains both narrative and numerical data.

Skills and Learning research - Search SLIM's databases for details of published and forthcoming research; details of labour market researchers; and good practice.

Proposed Work

Migration Analysis (0.3MB PDF file) - using similar data to the Travel to work zones we propose to look at migration into and around the region.
